Imam Nafi’ al-Madani/الإمام نافع المدني
“Black History Month” has passed so it’s on to Black History Year. I found this tidbit of info interesting as I had not come across it before. This is from Shaykh ‘Ashur Khadrawi al-Husni’s “Ahkam al-Tajwid b’riwayah Warsh ‘an Nafi’ min tariq al-Azraq/ أحكام التجويد برواية ورش عن نافع من طريق الأزرق للشيخ عاشور خضراوي الحسني”
Imam Nafi’ al-Madani/الإمام نافع المدني.
His full name being Nafi’ bin ‘Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Na’im al-Laythi Mawla … Halif Hamzah bin ‘Abd al-Muttalib/هو نافع بن عبد الرحمن بن أبي نعيم الليثي مولى جعونة بن شعوب الليثي حليف حمزة بن عبد المطلب.
His origins are from Asbahan, his coloring being dark black. He was an easy going companion, known to jest and of good character/أصله من أصبهان, وكان أسود اللون حالكا, صاحب دعابة وطيب أخلاق.
I found it interesting, not that he was culturally African, but that a major transmitter of the Qur’an was black or of black heritage.

Riwāyah as-Sūsī Recitation →
The following is an entire collection of Qur’ānic recitation by Qārī ‘Abdur-Rashīd Bin ‘Alī Ṣufī [قاري عبد الرشيد بن علي صوفي], a qārī [a Qur’ānic reciter] from Somalia who now residesin Qatar. The style of recitation here is as-Sūsī min Abi ‘Amru al-Basri [ السوسي من أبي عمرو البصري]. Some info on Shaykh ‘Abdur-Rashīd:
The Sheikh was born in Somalia in 1964. His father is the ālim ‘Alī Ibn ‘Abd ar-Rahmane Ṣufī (The muftī of Somalia). He was the first one who brought the science of tajwīd in Somalia.
He finished the Qur’ān learning by the age of ten, then he handled the tajwīd science according to Hafs An Asim’s version thanks to his mother.
He studies his father’s science of naḥw [grammar] and ash-Shafi’ī fiqh [jurisprudence].
Later on, shaykh ‘Abdur-Rashid went to Egypte to study the Qira’ât sciences at Qiraât Institute. He later became a professor of Qur’ānic science at al-Azhar Islamic University. In 1991, Qārī ‘Abdur-Rashīd went to Qatar to work in the country’s ministry. He is now the imam of Masjid Anas Bin Mālik, in Doha. He has also taken part in several durūs and conferences in Europe.
